Garage sale funds pet neutering
KARES, Kohala Animal Rescue and Education Service, will hold a garage sale from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the Lai Opua community center above Kealakehe High School on Haleolono Street.
All proceeds will fund spaying and neutering of pets.
VFW plans events this week
VFW Post 12122 behind Kona Locksmith off Kaiwi Street will host several events this week.
Doors will open at 10 a.m. on Super Bowl Sunday with a potluck provided by the fans. Tuesday will be marked by a Mardi Gras gumbo with red beans and rice dinner prepared by Henry and Kathy, the post’s Southern style cooks. It will be served from 6 to 8 p.m. for $20. There will be door prizes awarded and recorded New Orleans style music will be played.
Pasta with salad and dessert will be served from 5 to 7 p.m. Feb. 12 for $5.
The Korean War Veterans will meet at 10 a.m. Feb. 13, and the VFW will meet at 11:30.
The Post is also planning a picnic on President’s Day with hamburgers and dogs supplied.

Cop gives drug talk in Waimea
Hawaii Police Department Vice Officer Eddie Lewis, along with his drug dog, Bo, will give a talk for the community titled “Drugs: What to know, what do look for, what to do,” from 4 to 5 p.m. Monday in the Waimea School cafeteria.
The briefing will be a part of Waimea Middle School’s monthly Local Advisory Panel meeting. Once the drug briefing is completed, members will hold their regular monthly meeting from 5 to 6 p.m. and all are welcome to sit in on the discussion.
The event is free and light refreshments will be available.

WHEA seeks vendors for fair
West Hawaii Explorations Academy is seeking vendors to participate in its annual Community Fair from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on March 5 at its campus built in 2014. Activities include a free party bouncer, entertainment, campus tours, a silent auction, games, food booth, and school shirt sales.

Applications accepted for subsidized preschool
The Department of Human Services encourages families to apply for its Preschool Open Doors program before March 31. Applications will be considered for preschool participation between July 1, 2016 and June 30, 2017.
This program provides child care subsidies to eligible low- and moderate-income families to pay preschool tuition.
To qualify, children must be eligible to enter kindergarten in the 2017-18 school year (born between Aug. 1, 2011 and July 31, 2012). A child must be 5 years old on or before July 31 to enter kindergarten. Families may choose any state-licensed preschools.

Go Red For Women campaign is on
The American Heart Association urges Hawaii women and men to “Go Red For Women” on Friday by wearing red to raise awareness of the fact that one in three deaths of women is caused by heart disease and stroke in the U.S.
Although a leading health threat, 80 percent of heart disease and stroke events could be prevented. Women are encouraged to schedule an exam with their medical caregiver so their doctor can look for signs of heart disease, stroke, or other serious illnesses.
Souza makes college dean’s list
Kamela Toyoko Souza of Kailua-Kona was recently named to the dean’s list at the College of William and Mary for the fall 2015 semester.
To achieve dean’s list status, a full-time degree seeking undergraduate student must take at least 12 credit hours and earn a 3.6 quality point average during the semester.
William and Mary is the second oldest institution of higher learning in the U.S.
Chocolate Fest seeks culinary participants
The fifth annual Big Island Chocolate Festival is looking for culinary participants for the event’s May 14 gala at the Hapuna Beach Prince Hotel.
To festival’s theme is “Lavalicious-A Chocolate Salute to the 100th Birthday of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.”
Participating chefs, chocolatiers and confectioners can enter the free culinary competition, vying in a variety of “best” judged categories: bonbon, savory, bean-to-bar, plated dessert, Hawaiian cacao, sweet people’s choice, savory people’s choice and best decorated booth.
Presented by the Kona Cacao Association, the event benefits the ACF Kona Kohala Chefs Association, University of Hawaii Foundation endowment fund for the culinary program at Hawaii Community College-Palamanui and programs at Kona Pacific Public Charter School in Kealakekua.
